5/11/2023 0 Comments Broken harbor![]() ![]() Something tragic happened to Scorcher when he was a teenager that still ripples in his life today. Scorcher has a connection to Broken Harbor, his family used to spend summer holidays there. “Broken Harbor” is about the faces you present to the outside world and what’s going on beneath. I think he may be my second favorite character after Rob. I think a lot of people may not like Scorcher, but honestly this book helps you understand him a lot. I honestly don’t have any criticism of this book. It makes you sad that he was thinking of a long time partner and wanting that connection with someone and realizing he wasn’t going to get it. ![]() I didn’t like Scorcher in the last book, but loved him here. What a great installment in the Dublin Murder Squad. This book really does knock you in the teeth with a great ending I did not see coming. ![]() Updated: December 2019: Nothing more to add except this was a great read! I just re-read since I finished up French’s “The Witch Elm” and that book had me missing the Dublin Murder Squad. ![]() 5/11/2023 0 Comments Stone soup brown marcia brown![]() ![]() ![]() The illustrations notwithstanding, I am also pleasantly surprised by the story itself. A more than succesful marriage of text and image and if an author's note had been included, my now four star rating would most definitely have been moved to five stars (the mere fact that Marcia Brown's Stone Soup, that this 1948 Caldecott Honour book is still in current print, that alone already speaks volumes). And those illustrations really are wonderful (attention to detail, captured movement, realistic facial expressions), and the simple combination of white, black, grey and orange shades works surprisingly well. As someone who generally likes and actually much prefers lushly coloured and hued illustrations, I was not expecting to enjoy Marcia Brown's version of the European folktale of Stone Soup as much as I have. ![]() 5/11/2023 0 Comments Jane austen secret radical![]() However well you think you know the novels, you'll be raring to read them again once you've read this. does so brilliantly is to exhort us all to chuck out the chintz, and the teacups, and all the traditional romantic notions about Austen's work that have been fed to us for so long. Jane Austen, The Secret Radical puts that right. ![]() We just don't read her properly - we haven't been reading her properly for 200 years.
